Short Run Comix & Arts Festival

We're taking a break from most markets and festivals this year while we get settled in our new Seattle home. However, Yuka couldn't miss out on participating in Short Run Comix and Arts Festival!

Visit her at table H:45 at the Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center on Saturday, November 5. 11-6pm.

She'll primarily have artist books, zines, mini-comics and she'll be her most recent project: a narrative of pencils.

Flag Books

Designed by renowned book artist Hedi Kyle, this deceptively simple sculptural book features “flags” that are attached to a folded accordion spine. One of the most popular artist book structures, flag books allow for multiple ways reading and can sit open for a stunning display

Each participant will create two styles of flag books using personal imagery, found text, and mixed media. We will also learn adhesive and non-adhesive techniques to make covers for our flag books.

This workshop is suitable for all levels, from beginners to experienced artists and writers, suitable for adults and youth over the age of 14.

$60, includes materials.
Register online  or sign up for this class and Hustle Bustle Books for just $100 by calling 504-249-5624.

November 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Free and open to the public!

Ever looked into the fascinating world of the mini-book? According to the Miniature Book Society, a miniature book is no larger than 3 inches in height, width, or thickness. We’ll put this definition to the test at the Mystery Making Night: Miniature Books! Jessica Peterson of The Southern Letterpress and Yuka Petz of Studio Ippiki will be on hand to show you a few simple bookbinding structures and then see how small you can make your miniature books. Whether you have bookbinding experience or not, come throw down and show us your miniature book skills. We’ll even have a super special secret prize for the smallest book!

Materials are provided. If you have to have some examples from your own book collection, bring them for show and tell!

BYOB but we’ll have a couple of tasty treats for ya!

6 p.m. to 9 p.m., this event is casual… drop in, make your books, and hang out. The super special secret prize will be awarded at 8:30 p.m.

Decorative Papers Workshop

We will delve into surface design and explore three different approaches to creating beautiful decorative papers. We will begin by exploring color, layering and patternmaking through the spontaneous joy of paste papers. Then we will turn to traditional Japanese techniques, delving into the contemplative reveries of suminagashi marbling, and discovering sekkazome, a Japanese fold and dye method that result in beautiful kaleidoscopic patterns. At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a giant stack of stunning papers to use in your books and other projects. All levels welcome.

This workshop uses entirely non-toxic materials. All materials will be supplied.

$60 registration +$15 material fee, limited to 4 participants.

Register in advance by emailing yuka@studioippiki.com or calling (504) 264-8267.

Tunnel Book Workshop

A tunnel book (aka peephole book) brings together a set of pages with accordions on either side, creating a book with multiple layers of foreground, mid-ground and background. Combining collage, cut paper, and bookbinding techniques, we will create dimensional windows into a multi-layered scene or world. After examining an assortment of models and brainstorming the possibilities of this unique book structure, everyone will make their own tunnel book using a variety of papers, mark-marking and collage media. All levels welcome.

All materials are included in material fee, but you are encouraged to bring collage materials that you might want to include in your book.

$60 registration +$10 material fee, limited to 4 participants.
