I was so excited to offer my inaugural Hustle Bustle Books workshop at 5 Press Gallery on October 25. The idea for this workshop has been knocking about in my head for a couple years, so it was thrilling to bring it to reality.
We made 12 book structures in 4 hours! I envisioned this workshop for folks who want to learn a variety of different structures that can easily be editioned into artist books, zines, etc. We made one page books, pamphlets, accordions, stick bindings, volvelles, map folds, stab binding, and more!
As I develop any workshop, I pay close attention to make sure we're learning techniques that can be done at your kitchen table. The great majority of us don't have access to a full bindery and print shop but I don't think that should stop anyone from making books and putting their words, images, and ideas out into the world. I introduced a variety of different types of structures so that when they're ready to take their ideas into book form, the students in the workshop will have a variety of options to choose from and they can think about how their content will fit best in the different book structures.
It was a fantastic and very full four hours! It was definitely a hustle, but everyone did a great jb and came away with a full library of structural models. I hope everyone in the workshop goes home and makes dozens upon dozens more books, for themselves, for their friends, and for people to read, experience and enjoy!
